NERC Directs Unmetered Maximum Demand Customers Not To Pay Estimated Bill

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has given a directive that electricity distribution company (Discos) should not disconnect any of their maximum demand customers that have not been metered since March 1, 2017.

According to the commission today on its twitter account, it said: "1. @nerc stops estimated bills for MD customers as from 1/3/17. Directives not affecting bills before that date.

"2. @nerc says MD Customer not provided meter by 1/3/17 shall not pay bill prepared on estimation. Un-metered MD customer should call @nerc.

"3. @nerc says disco shall not disconnect MD customers who has refused to pay estimated bills as 1/3/17."

This directive implies that Maximum Demand customers are not bound to pay estimated bill in so far as they were not provided with meter by 1/3/2017.

NERC calls upon these unmetered customers to report to NERC. It is however noted that the directive does not affect the bills before the aforementioned date.

Maximum demand electricity customers are categorised as those connected on the 11Kv (high tension wire) electricity lines, mostly with their dedicated transformers. They include heavy users of electricity like commercial business plazas; small scale industries and others.
