    The Gambia Rejoins Commonwealth

The Gambia will rejoin the Commonwealth, the BBC Africa reports.

This is coming almost five years after it withdrew under the rule of ousted President Yahya Jammeh who branded the body a "neo-colonial institution", the news site observes.

Mr Jammeh had clashed with the Commonwealth over the criticisms he recieved over his government's poor human rights record. A record that he sustained in most parts of his 22 years of authoritarian rule. He fled into exile after being defeated by President Adama Barrow during The Gambia's last general elections.

The event will be commemorated at the Commonwealth's headquarters in London later today.

The Gambia will be the fourth country to return to the Commonwealth - after South Africa, Pakistan and Fiji.
